All you need is some red paper and a white background to make this beautiful quilled heart decor perfect for Valentine's Day.

I was looking for some Valentine’s Day decor a couple of years ago that wasn’t quite typical. I didn’t want pink or a cherry red like you typically find either. So I decided to create something instead. I’d seen a couple of examples of quilling, so I wanted to try a quilled heart.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Start with an 8″x8″ piece of MDF or piece of wood. Chad cut this one for me, but you can typically find something similar at the craft stores OR you can have Home Depot or another store make a cut from a board for you.
  2. Paint your board your color of choice, and let it dry.
  3. Next, cut a ton of 1/4″ strips of 12″ long card stock. I used Riding Hood Red card stock by Stampin’ Up! because I liked the dusty red, but a thinner paper would probably be easier.
  4. Now start rolling the strip as tight as you can. This is where the thinner paper would have been easier. Roll up all the strips, and then you’ll be ready for the fun part. They’ll unravel a bit, and that’s okay.
  5. Draw your heart shape on the board, then use some craft glue to start filling in the shape. Add your spirals until it’s nice and full, and let it dry.

I love how simple my quilled heart is, and yet how effective the red spirals are against the white board. It’s the perfect Valentine’s Day decor. Each year since I’ve pulled it out and remember how much I love its simplicity. And I do have to say that since I used a very thick card stock, it’s been super durable, even though it’s stored for most of the year.Quilled Heart Decor | Mabey She Made It #valentine #heart #quilling

Hello Lisa,

I agree with you that this one is simple, but it really caught my attention. It looks really durable and I can tell that it’s not for Valentine’s Day only, it can also be used during Anniversary. 🙂

By the way, what other kind of paper would you suggest?

Thanks and God bless
