As you probably know, we recently moved into a house after being in limbo for a month and a half (in which time my sewing machine was boxed), and we moved in one week before my Saige started Kindergarten. So amid unpacking, registering her for school, getting groceries in the house, and all the other things you do when you first move in, I decided to sew up a few tunics for school. Because I didn’t have enough to do already. But really I was just missing sewing so much that’s all I wanted to do.
i let Saige help me pick patterns and fabric, and I got to work. What’s ironic is that the patterns we chose were all Shwin Designs patterns–the Glass Onion, the McKenzie, and the Maggie Mae.
This was my first time sewing up a Maggie Mae. It took a little more time in construction than the Glass Onion or the McKenzie (which is probably the fastest of the three), but I LOVE the silhouette of this top.
The curved bodice, the simplicity of the sleeve, the contrast band, and the buttons down the back all make me swoon.
I made a size 3T with no modifications, and I think next time I’ll add a little to the main fabric skirt length. This hits at her hips, and while its great with jeans, I wouldn’t want her to wear with leggings at this length. But this is how good the Maggie Mae looked after wearing it to school all afternoon.
I also made up a 12-18 months for my 3-year-old. The smaller size ended up being a little shorter than I’d hoped, so I will have to add a wider band to the bottom before its ready to wear.
But I can’t believe how amazing the Maggie Mae looks on–its such a fun look and a fun tunic to put together. I’ll have to try the dress length next!

She's got to be the most stylish Kindergarten student there! I'm totally jealous that she's got the perfect messy bun going for her, too. I've yet to master that look!
I love her wardrobe, but of course I'm biased. :) She does have a great head of hair--it's pretty thick but still soft.
May I ask if body measurements are given on these patterns? I always check the lengths bcause every style is different. I love the first one you showed us, but it would be a summer top or I would get long sleeve t-shirts to put underneath for my granddaughter and great niece, both of who would ROCK THAT STYLE! (Are old people allowed to say that?)
Of course you may ask! Yes, the body measurements are included so you know which size to use. My girl is tall for her age, so I usually add length to her tops but didn't on this one. And I think this would be darling with a long sleeve tee underneath!
It's lovely! Looks like great school-wear. And wow, getting sewing done while unpacking, respect! Even without a move I find it challengeing to get sewing time in the first weeks of school...

What a beautiful top - almost worth changing my habit of a lifetime and ironing clothes (as opposed to sewing projects!!!)
Ha! I feel that same way Vicky. It's so funny how much we can detest ironing when pressing is such a big part of sewing.

It would be just fine with leggings or bare legs as long as she is at home .
It's a little short for bare legs, but leggings are a great option.
Hi there, would you happen to have the instructions? It seems like she closed her site and I never bothered to save the instructions. Thank goodness that I still have the pattern. I just need a reminder on how to sew the bodice!
