Why is it that small versions of things are so cute? Be it small shoes, tea sets, or anything else really, if it’s small, I’m a sucker for it. So the idea of creating this mini mod corduroy suit got me all kinds of giddy. Little girls in a suit? Why not!?
I am really excited to be part of the Girls Bundle Up tour–have you seen all the fun patterns and the amazing versions floating around? I’m just lucky to be part of it. This bundle of 11 patterns includes everything from the blazer and skirt above to pjs, coats, and more. And each of the ladies listed below has sewn up one or two of the patterns to give you an amazing idea of what you can do with the bundle. But first let’s talk a little more about the Phresh Blazer and Potato Chip Skirt that make up the Mini Mod Corduroy Suit.
I saw the Phresh Blazer, and there was no going back–I had to have it! I don’t think I’ve ever crushed on a blazer this hard before, but just seeing the pattern I knew it was going to be one of my favorites. And now that I’ve sewn it up, I can talk it up even more. This thing is beautiful inside and out. The construction is gorgeous and it shows in the fit. I love the mandarin collar, the welt pockets, the curved hemline–it’s perfection. And because of all the seams, it gave me the opportunity to add one of my favorite details–piping.
I had this brown vintage piping I picked up at a thrift store, and I couldn’t wait to add it to both the blazer and the skirt. Combined with the cream baby cord it’s a luscious combination of modern sophistication in mini mod fashion.
And although there’s no piping on the back, I LOVE the fitted look of the blazer and the clean lines. I think the clean back takes the mini mod look up a notch too. I chose to make the gathered sleeve, but there’s a non-gathered option as well. And while I love the straight look, I went with gathers because she’s only four.
Then there’s the Potato Chip Skirt (because you can’t make just one). It has reversible, lined, and unlined options, which is so much fun. For this outfit, I opted not to make it reversible because I always want it to be worn with the blazer as is and I didn’t line it because I used corduroy which is heavy-weight so it didn’t need the lining. It was a quick sew, and I really will be making another. I think next time I’ll make deeper pockets though…so more treasures will fit inside. And since both the older girls want to wear skirts ALL the time, I know this is going to become a go-to skirt pattern.
The only part I don’t like about the Mini Mod Corduroy Suit? That my first baby is growing up so quickly. Seriously, I can’t get over it. But she makes growing up look good. And now I really want this outfit for myself. I’m really tempted to do a modern mommy and me look…
And can I just add that my new Janome sewing machine never hesitated with any layers of corduroy–and piping? I’m seriously loving it!

So cute! I also am planning on making little skirt suits for my daughter, two years old, with these patterns. I have some vintage sort fabric that I want to use. My grandmother always wore handmade wool skirt suits. Very tailored. She would make my mother and me all sorts of dresses but only wore the same skirt suit pattern. She even made her button up shirts for underneath with with a lightweight wool, a knit I think. I never saw her in anything else but I did see jeans in her room once. She said she wore them for gardening. Of course she never had those on when we came over. It would have been fun to see.
